- RUAG SPACEMaster Thesis: Applications of metallic additive manufacturing for space technologiesseptembre 2017 - février 2018 (5 mois)Neuchatel, SwitzerlandResponsibilities In order to determine the benefits of metalic additive manufacturing (AM) for RUAG Space's 'slip rings' within satellite constellations, I collaborated with the CSEM to conduct extensive research into the applicability of selective laser melting (SLM). I determined that flexible contact points could not reasonably be manufactured by AM and that the limitations of AM could be overcomed by applying technologies from the electronics industry. Key Achievements• Identified and analyzed main limitations of AM-Selective Laser Melting (SLM) including surface roughness, accuracy, and feature sizes (limits in the order of 5, 50, 500 microns respectively).• Highlighted the significant challenges posed by non-standard electrical interfaces in Am SLM. These constraints, in particular the rotor-stator and stator-connector interfaces in slip rings, significantly reduce the benefits of SLM.• Concluded that despite its potential benefits, the cost-effectiveness of SLM is overshadowed by these issues, making it less recommended than other technologies.
