The ERCD, as part of the CAA and within the advisory role of the latter to the Ministry of Transport, is a research group that publishes reports on all environmental aspects related to aircraft noise (metrics, abatement, health, nuisance…). It also provides noise contours for current airports as well as proposed scenarios aiding government in their decision making on airport development. This job has allowed me to develop programming skills in C# and use of SQL that have assisted me greatly in being a much more efficient contributor. The main tasks assigned to me were:
    • Monitoring, effects, modelling and contouring of noise from commercial aircraft of real and proposed scenarios, using in-house modeling software. Modelling of noise contours from helicopter operations using NORAH (Noise of Rotor Aircraft using Hemispheres).
    • Development of software tools (Excel, VBA, C#) enabling higher productivity processing data. Software tools were also developed to estimate other aspects of commercial aircraft operations, i.e. vertical profile, fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions per aircraft type.
    • Assessment of the environmental impact of the use by aircraft of airspace
    • Noise model development and analysis in collaboration with ICAO or EASA developer's group.

    • (2011), Sustainable material flow analyses to report on the environmental benefits of recycling precious metals and engineered plastics. -Commissioned by SIMS Metals Recycling UK-. Following the Greenhouse Gas Protocol for measuring and accounting energy use and greenhouse emissions, the environmental footprint of the recycling operations of precious metals and engineered plastics from electronic waste. This footprint was compared to the environmental footprint of primary routes (mining or extraction).
    • (2006-2009), Project: Development of a novel methodology for the in-vessel composting of catering food wastes, fully compliant with European legislative requirements and PAS 100 quality standards for composted materials. The project included preliminary study, field trials, implementation and delivery of a methodology for sustainable waste management. Sponsored by Imperial Machine Company, Wrexham, Wales. This work provided a procedure for the safe composting of catering wastes separated at source, producing a high quality compost by PAS 100 standard. The process has been successfully replicated in the UK in many prison service facilities, army barracks, event halls, universities…
    • (2009), Report on the merit of emerging gasification technologies vs incineration for the treatment of waste -Commissioned by Surrey County Council, UK. Incineration, Gasification and Pyrolysis plants across the UK were compared on aspects such as: capacity, technology, products, energy recovery, efficiency, sustainability, emissions, etc.
    • (2008), Report on the environmental benefits of recycling: Aluminium, Copper, Ferrous, Lead, Nickel, Tin, Zinc and Paper. -Commissioned by the Bureau of International Recycling. A novel benchmark efficiency concept to the energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions of different alternatives to treatment of materials was applied.
    • (2006), Report on value recovery from organic waste -Commissioned by Erinaceous group plc.
  • Hopeman Associates Ltd
    Consultant
    janvier 2001 - septembre 2011 (10 ans et 8 mois)
As part of Hopeman Associates I had the opportunity to work for the UK Environment Agency in a variety of projects.
    • (2001-2010), Data Analysis, development of software tools, and landfill status reporting identifying sources of pollution and their severity- Environment Agency (England and Wales), Thames Region, West Area.
    • (2008), Survey and inspection of Hazardous Waste producers – Environment Agency, UK.
    • (2005), Inspection of prescribed substances stored and used by farming operators in the West Area, Thames Region, Environment Agency, England, UK.
    • (2003), Anaerobic Digestion/Biogasification survey -Environment Agency Thames Region, UK
